Anita Campbell has written a terrific post with lessons for small business owners. Her list is comprised of things she wishes she had known as she was starting her business. She focuses on three main areas:
Offer smaller-ticket items that sell quickly. Make it easy for customers to buy or hire you for something that doesn’t require a huge commitment. You need to prime the pump at first!
Don’t waste money on expensive marketing UNTIL you’ve figured out your offering and your brand. Marketing is crucially important. But first things first. Figure out what business you are in first.
Integrate technology deeply into your business. Successful small business owners devoted time to learning about technology, and saw technology as a key competitive advantage.
I would add a fourth item to the list. Don’t try to do it alone. Seek out other business owners and advisors who will comprise your support system, is critical for your success.
