Writing Calls-to-Action

Wouldn’t it be great if you could just walk up to people and tell them what you wanted them to do? You could try it, but people might look at you weird. Don’t worry though, there is a place where you can tell people exactly what you want them to do – in your website’s call-to-action, or CTA, buttons.

Why Twitter is Daunting for Small Business

Twitter is my favorite social media platform. It’s where I get the most up-to-date information on events that news sites will take hours to post about. It’s a unique platform where you can “watch” a popular TV series or a presidential debate with millions of diverse individuals and feel like you’re all in the same room, having a conversation. It’s a place to connect with brands, celebrities or authors that you’d never have the chance to talk to regularly. And, most importantly I think, it is a platform where minority voices have a chance to be heard and social justice issues can come to the forefront, causing real change.

The Surest Way to Avoid Success

Procrastination feels incredibly good in the moment. Whether you procrastinate by watching a YouTube video on motivational cats or checking out creepy Wikipedia entries, it always feels so satisfying, rebellious even – you’re not doing what you’re supposed to be doing. But it’s a shallow satisfaction because behind it lurks the terrible anxiety that precious minutes to do important things are being wasted

The Secret Life of a Content Writer

The Secret Life of a Content Writer

When people ask me what I do for a living, I tell them I’m a content writer. At the mention of these two words, they gasp, “content writer?!?” And I nod my head, yes, knowing they’re suddenly envisioning fancy Great Gatsby-esque parties, whirlwind yacht cruises across the world and frequent dinners with royalty. It’s true, all true, but I’ll tell you, it’s not all glamorous parties, early 20th century cocktails and yacht tours of the world when you’re a content writer, no sir, sometimes you have to get down to work.

Meta Descriptions: They Will Not Be Ignored

Meta Descriptions: They Will Not Be Ignored

Despite what the banner implies, this is not the most glamorous of blog topics. That doesn’t make it any less important!

Meta descriptions are probably not going to help you rank highly in SERPs (search engine results pages). So, dispel the thought that this is why you are creating them. You are creating meta descriptions for human eyes. If a client is navigating to a website through a Google search and not through your URL, the meta description will be a factor in deciding whether or not they will click. It’s quite possibly the last place you have to get the attention of a customer online. And you had better have a meta description that matches what’s on your page or potential clients are likely to click off your page in search of something more relevant to their search.

Page Titles for Every Occasion

Page titles are probably something most web users take for granted. And that’s fine for the user, but it’s not something a business should take for granted. Titles are the last chance you have to persuade a user to click on your website. Don’t neglect them and hope for the best; while page titles aren’t the most glamorous portion of your website, it’s important to have them for both the user experience and for SEO.

If you take a look at the Google search engine page results of anything you’ve searched, you’ll see a variety of ways in which businesses have chosen to write their page titles…

How To: Write a Basic Small Business Website

How To: Write a Basic Small Business Website

If you’ll remember, I used to write websites. All day long, in my little cubicle, I wrote home pages, services pages, contact pages and more for bakers, roofers, Reiki practitioners, septic tank cleaners, oilfield pipe insulators, tree surgeons–really any small business you can think of. It was a production environment and my fellow web writers and I all worked using the same “formula”. What I learned was that while very few websites end up being identical, each starts with the same basic setup, no matter the industry.
