In web design, user-friendly, content-rich sites are a must. Building websites on a WordPress platform allows Roundpeg to provide our clients – mostly small businesses with limited time and resources to manage their sites — with an easy-to-update web presence.

Although it allows our clients to do a lot of great things, WordPress does have its limitations. For current client, Shade Tree Farm, LLC, we encountered one such limitation.

WordPress is a content management system, which allows users access to pre-built themes for designing their websites (At Roundpeg, we prefer Elegant Themes). Instead of coding a site page by page, you can make minor adjustments to the theme’s templates to create a customized design that fits your unique needs.

In this particular case, Shade Tree Farm, preferred to display their site’s featured images (trees) in portrait layout. Unfortunately, every theme we looked at featured the rotating images in landscape view. The solution lay in a compromise. The rotating banner was used to showcase the farm’s beautiful nursery and rolling landscape. Then, to give viewers a portrait display of the individual trees available at the farm, we created a tree catalog in the site’s interior.  We also inserted portrait images in text boxes on the home page.

It’s tough to say no to a client. So the challenge is to find a creative way to meet their objectives. To check out the final product, visit the site.
