Last fall I figured out I was a social media chef because great tasting stews and social media strategies need many of the same things:
- The Right Ingredients – Most stews don’t need fish, beef, chicken, and veal. You select one main ingredient as the foundation of your stew. The same is true for your strategy. Not every business needs ( nor can they support ) an active presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Plaxo, Merchant Circle, FriendFeed, Foursquare, SmallerIndiana, and Let’ts Make it Rain. For small business owners, the trick is to select one as your primary network. Which one? Depends on the taste of your customers. Where are they most likely to be spending their time.
- Season to Taste -Excellent stews strike a perfect balance, just the right amount of salt, garlic, and onion. Your social media stew needs balance as well. The most interesting people on twitter or face book, mix personal and business, conversations and updates, with links, likes and comments on content provided by others.
- Simmer Slowly – Great stews can’t be rushed! If you try to rush it, you’ll wind up with tough meat and hard vegetables. With social media, building strong relationships and a good following takes time. If you expect overnight results, you’ll be disappointed.
